The Story Fairy

Why just the other day the story fairy came my way and she whispered a story in my ear. She truly did…a wonderful story just for you…it is all about the mischievous pixie in the King’s garden.

It was a beautiful spring day. Mary McGuire the prettiest pixie to ever dwell in the gardens of the great castle of Glenn Kerry was sitting on top of a wild flower down by the castle pond. Her curly red hair shone in the sunlight and her lacy wings sparkled with dew. But, looks are deceiving. The pixie sat sunning herself looking as innocent as a newborn babe; when she was really conjuring up her mischief for the day. That's what pixies do… not that they do anything harmful…it's just that they love to use their powers on humans in a mischievous manner so to speak.

The Princess of Glenn Kerry would soon be taking her morning walk down by the pond. The pixie flew down by the path. "Just a little prank…twill do no harm,” she said. While hovering over the walkway she blinked her eyes three times, twitched her nose, nodded her head, and fluttered her wings for just an instant. Pixie dust flew in all directions and the pathway became covered with tiny pebbles. "Just a little prank…twill do no harm…my job is done…let's watch the fun," said the pixie and she ducked under a big leaf to watch.

Along came the Princess. She stepped on the pebbles. "Oh noooo," cried the Princess as she slid and landed in the muddy water. She was covered in mud and she ran back to the castle in tears. All the time Mary McGuire stood there with a big grin on her face. "Tee-hee, twas me…poor little princess…just a little prank…twill do no harm," said Mary McGuire.

The pixie flew deep into the garden and landed near the wishing pool. She gazed at her reflection and wished she had someone to play with. But, Mary McGuire was the only pixie in the King’s Garden. So she blinked her eyes three times, twitched her nose, nodded her head, and fluttered her wings for just an instant and said, "Where is my chariot this wondrous day? Come hither my lovely and let's fly away." A beautiful butterfly landed close by and the pixie climbed up on its back and away they went.

That year Mary McGuire was the terror of the garden. There was no one that was safe in that garden. From the cook to the King of Glenn Kerry himself this pixie played prank after prank. Soon no one came to the beautiful garden, they were afraid of what might happen.
Poor Mary McGuire was alone with no one to play tricks on. She said to herself, " Just a little prank…twill do no harm…twas what I thought…but now alas I am all alone and very sad…the King himself is very mad…what shall I do…what shall I do?" Each day was the same.
Then one day while she was sunning herself she heard the Princess's voice. "Can it be? The Princess of Glenn Kerry taking her morning walk down by the pond?" said Mary McGuire to herself. She jumped up and flew down closer to the walkway to see for herself. She decided to eavesdrop on the Princess who was walking in the garden with the Queen.

"Mother the wedding has to be in the garden," said the Princess. "But, so many terrible things have been happening here in the garden," answered the Queen. "They were just accidents. I have always dreamed of having my wedding in the garden," said the Princess. "Alright dear, the garden it is," said the Queen. "A wedding in the garden; that will mean lots and lots of people. I can hardly wait!" said Mary McGuire to herself. There was plenty of excitement in the garden from that day forward; gardeners, carpenters, chefs, cooks and maids were everywhere. All the time Mary McGuire just flitted throughout the garden watching.

It was the day of the wedding and royalty from all around the countryside had come to the great castle of Glenn Kerry. Why it was all Mary McGuire could do not to get stepped on, or sat on, or even worse seen. This would be the true test of Mary McGuire's character. Would she be able to make it through the day without causing any mischief? Ah, it was tempting with all those humans there.
The garden was lovely and the Princess was beautiful. At that moment something came over our little pixie. She said, "Where is my chariot this wondrous day? Come hither my lovely and let's fly away." No sooner were the words out of her mouth than a beautiful butterfly landed next to her. She climbed on its back and whispered to the butterfly,” Call all the butterflies of the garden. Tell them to follow us. We will make the garden even lovelier than it is for the Princess." What a sight, no one could believe their eyes; the garden was filled with butterflies circling and flying over the aisle that the Princess was to walk down. There was Mary McGuire at the head leading them as the Princess walked down the flower- strewn path. The wedding was beautiful and our little pixie managed to behave herself.

So you see sometimes even the most mischievous of pixies like Mary McGuire can have a change of heart. Although, as the story goes every now and then strange things still happened in the garden by the great castle of Glenn Kerry. Which leads me to believe that Mary McGuire just couldn't help but conjure up some mischief every now and then while she's sunning herself on top of that wildflower down by the pond…

The End
