Detergent Gasoline – Does it work?
by Jeff Bressler

I was recently invited to Chevron’s Richmond, California refinery with a number of other journalists to learn everything there is to learn about their Techron detergent top tier gasoline and packaged concentrate.

Through our safety glass shielded eyes we learned that Techron is a patented additive developed by Chevron that consists of a family of compounds known as polyether amines. Techron reduces accumulations of deposits in fuel injectors and on gas intake valves, and prevents or removes sulfur deposits from fuel sending units. Gasoline’s that meet these cleaning standards are known as Top Tier.

In addition to Chevron and their partner Texaco, Top Tier gasoline is also featured at among others Conoco Phillips, Shell and BP.

Six top automakers, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and Audi recognize that the current EPA minimum detergent requirements do not go far enough to ensure optimal engine performance.

Since the minimum additive performance standards were first established by EPA back in 1995, most gasoline marketers have actually reduced the concentration level of detergent additive in their gasoline by up to 50%. As a result, the ability of a vehicle to maintain stringent Tier 2 emission standards have been hindered, leading to engine deposits which can have a big impact on in-use emissions and driver satisfaction.

So, now that you have the skinny on Top Tier gas, the question is does it actually work?

Well seeing was believing, and after examining hands on before and after Top Tier gasoline treated parts such as fuel injector heads, intake valves and intake port area’s it was pretty obvious to the naked eye that this gasoline is no snake oil.

It may cost a little more but I’m convinced that by using Top Tier gasoline you can have a car that runs smother, has better fuel economy, hesitates and knocks less and has lower exhaust emissions.
